A Friend Comments on Schiavo

A month of silence, wow! Since I wrote last Donna's dad passed. He is now "resting" with Jesus experiencing "life after death" and awaiting "life after life after death." We talk about the hereafter in the popular context as "going to heaven when we die." Scripture doesn't seem to share that sentiment. Donna is coping well. Pray for her as you remember her.

A friend in my DMin Cohort, (George Fox University) Tony Blair (no not the British PM) made the following comment that I think is worth passing along.

"I commented to a men's group that part of this Schiavo case is an illustration of the damage done by Rene Descartes. Descartes rooted our existence in cognition ("I think, therefore, I am"), the effect of which is a utilitarian understanding of our humanity. When we can no longer cogitate, we no longer "are." What Mike Schiavo has asked for—and what our courts have acquiesced in—is the cessation of life support for someone they no longer regard as truly alive anyway. If, however, we follow the alternative ("I am loved, therefore, I am") then we might find something of value yet remaining in Terri Schiavo. I know I do."
